Whilst I love the word "outwith" it is particular to Scotland and I have rarely used or heard it used in England except by people of Scottish descent or affectation.
Now that you make me think about it, I would have to agree that I have rarely heard it used in England. I often like to confuse people by using the rarely used English version 'without' (as in the opposite of within).

Lol you've got me there. Still it's accepted in academic circles here and it's in the OED... *tries to look intelligent*
I often forget just how many of the words i use without even thinking are Scottish, they tend to be the things that give away my nationality to people who think i sound American (to my eternal rage... lol)
I didn't realise until recently that 'fortenight' was one such word. And that was only only because some yah girl in my tutorial asked what it meant when i said it. Then again, she was bitching a while ago because her dad got her a BMW for christmas. But it was the wrong one. That BASTARD, giving her the wrong car like that. Can you EVEN imagine?? I wanted to phone childline or something... My point was maybe she's just incredibly unedcuated??

Surely few things could be so insulting as to confuse you with an American.

You'd have me quite confused if you said it with an 'e'.
