Honestly, though I do know some who have initially met online, it wasn't through a dating site, it was through sites about other interests they shared (like here). They got to know a little of each other, slowly, became online friends, and eventually met as friends that had a few things in common and it went from there.

Anyone I've known that did hook up initially on a dating sight, it didn't last long. I think those sites encourage the hook up too fast and don't encourage you to get to know the other person enough first.
