Need some help on dating

I recently graduated from high school and I really like this other guy in my same grade. Although we barely talked in high school, lately we have been hanging out and talking a lot. He's also gay. I really like him but am a little hesitant in asking him if he wants to go out for all practical reasons like I am going out of state for college (Texas, in fact) while he is staying in Maryland. All my friends are saying just to ask him if I really feel that I like him, but I still don't know. I think he also likes me. Should I just go for it and see what happens, or should I leave it?
