Well we've just recently gotten our first openly gay provincial premier in Canada, Kathleen Wynne. At the federal level there is one gay cabinet minister in the Tory cabinet (John Baird), but he keeps very quiet about his transparent closet because there is still a strong social conservative contingent of the Tory caucus. Political enfranchisement is a big part of identifying real acceptance and inclusion in society. However, I have reservations about the liberalizing, assimilationist agenda, because I feel it is more about rearranging who the oppressors get to be rather than fighting that oppression. Shifting the burden of marginalization onto an ever smaller segment of the community (drag queens, trans, polyamorous, different aged partners, the HIV positive) so that those who can fit into the new normal can enjoy the privilege of displacing their aggression onto the vulnerable. Eh, I trouble myself too much thinking about these issues.
