We are considering Expatriating
#1
Hi guys,
Being a gay American is becoming somewhat freighting in the current political climate. As some of you already know, my husband is a high ranking official in the Department of Defense and there is a program available through his job that would allow us to expatriate.
I spent a portion of my youth in the UK and remember it fondly, and my husband has worked in the UK numerous times and really liked it.
If Romney does win his bid for President, it seems more and more likey that the US will continue it's current trend towards theocracy and that is something that neither of us wish to endure or put our future child through.
Romney released an I interview yesterday in which he made statements referring to the separation of church and state, saying that he believed they should be "less separate". Well, to me "less separate" is sort of like saying "a little pregnant", but the issue if marriage equality has really pollerized the country these past few months and I genuinely fear that, should Romney become elected, much of the gains the LGBT community has made will be over turned.
So, what do you guys think? Should we, as my husband suggests, consider expatriating?
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks,
Beau

It's a hard call. Obama will ruin the economy and gun rights at the least, Romney will set LGBT and other minority rights back a few paces.

If you and your husband are truly not comfortable here and, if the other things you would loose as far as rights go, in expatriating, don't mean as much as the things you gain in another country, then your husband is right, you need to seriously consider it.

Oh gosh Beaux! Bighug

I would be lying if I said I didn't consider it myself though Argentina would be my first choice....

The religious right and Republicans are dead set on bringing us back to the 1950s and blurring the lines between church and state...trying to rewrite history to insist that is what "God meant" and what "God wants" and you SHOULD be scared.

70 years ago the Jews were not afraid because they thought such a thing could never happen..but it CAN.,..and it DID! Do not forget that gay people were also in the camps in case someone doesnt' know where the pink triangles came from it is a good idea to educate yourself. History can and DOES repeat itself.

70 years is NOTHING...it is yesterday if you look at the time...and people liek Mike Huckabee...the darling of the conservatives..advocate for us to be on an island...while others call for death...and people think it is just a few people...they are wrong...it is a few people who are bold enough to SAY IT .

I would prefer you stay and fight because more and more gays are actually voting for this guy... OMG:eek:...but I would understand why you would choose to leave.

PS...Romney's intention to enshrine discrimination into the constitution is MORE THAN a few paces....

its a big step to make ! would u be waiting till well after to election to see if Romney does make negative changes first ? well paid jobs are hard to find in the uk (any job really) so would your husband be able just to ask for a transfer - the saying goes (the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence ) its not always the case, if your both settled in work and where you live then making a move to another country with very expensive prices compared to USA in my limited experience would be a challenge which im sure you 've looked into already - house prices/petrol/living expenses have soared here in the uk - not putting you off but its just a fact - unleaded petrol is £6 per gallon as an example right now

You also have to remember, at most he can only be there 8 years. There is only so much damage you can do in 8 years.

yes. not to mention, all of the crap they would want to undo would have to pass both the house AND the senate, and be declared constitutional by the supreme court. While the house and senate are both mostly republican right now, there are quite a few more centered republicans there. not to mention the supreme court is pretty liberal right now.

The "centered" Republicans have all been pushed out by the Super Pac Ultra Conservative factions of the Party if you have been paying any attention. Don't believe me? Read interview after interview. I am a political junkie. Lisa Murkowski was able to overcome the odds but more and more they just retire and give up their seats. The only good thing is the backlash that is coming. History will tell you that when 10% of the population owns 90% of the wealth and 90% owns 10% you are gonna have a HUGE problem.

The Supreme Court Liberal? I am not even gonna go there.

It is a big step, that is why it is something we are really having to consider seriously. As far as a job is concerned, he has already been offered a position within the government, essentially a position that mirrors his current position at the White Hiuse, so work isn't our biggest worry at the moment. Our real concern is leaving our families behind, but we are expecting a baby next year and feel that our family-unit has to take priority to our parents and siblings.

Tell that to George Bush. In his 8 years he tanked the economy, started 2 wars and set our nation back decades.
