Gay engagement/ proposal?
#11
im not inclined to do the romantic thing on one knee.

if you move in, even if your intention is not to immediately marry, still get the utilitie bills in both your names, get the rent agreement in both of your names and get two or more bank account/ credit cards in a joint account.
-get a general medical power of attorney signed.
-get a will for each party
-if you trust the other get a general power of attorney.

think through what YOU want to do, what is good for you. get an agreement signed before you marry and establish who owned what and where things go in a separation. For example who gets the pet, car. Request a cooling off period and arbitration. Once the divorce is final the other party cant come back in court, the agreement(s) are final.

NY allows marriage, not valid in other states.

Pellaz, after recent experiences, I wouldn't go that far without safeguards in place first. Yes a relatively small, emergency use only joint bank account and the medical POA, but nothing beyond that. It's just too big a mess to undo without a prenuptial agreement in place first.

I'm not going to have to fight for my home, retirement savings and, more in court again and, I hope my learning that the hard way will prevent others here form making at least some of the mistakes I made.

to prove domestic partnership, so you can get or supply health care insurance for example:
for sure the utility bills, rental agreement, at least 2 banks accounts

50% of marriages fail, think it through all the way.
or
the other 50% will be married to the same person for their whole life

Good points to think about. Its always nice to remember that not everything is always going to be roses and rainbows. Being a sound business mind is always important when incorporating others in ones life.

I also thought that Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia allowed for same sex marriage.

I didn't realize there were such strict guidelines on health insurance coverage. It must vary by company because I know I worked for a major health insurance company previously and the guidelines to cover a domestic partner didn't seem quite so stringent.

Some other states also allow a legal domestic partnership. It's worth looking into if you ever work or live elsewhere. Getting out of it can be as big a mess as a divorce though, if you don't have a prenuptial. Check the laws and, make sure you have everything right.

As much as we all hope and dream of forever, that just isn't reality for everyone. Better safe than sorry as they say.

well in my case i had to get down on both knees which was a achievement in itself, since i have a medical condition that affects my ankles, so getting down from standing was no easy feint, but i did it!
