Really? I thought the whole thing was a social commentary about the economic issue of silver vs. the gold standard during the 1896 presidential election......McKinley was the wicked witch of the West, Toto was Prohibition, Dorothy = traditional American values etc etc and Oz comes from the fact that silver and gold are measured in ounces in the US, abbreviated oz.......

Or am I just totally wrong and that's just a conspiracy theory made up by my AP US History teacher?

^ That's new to me....all the biographies of Frank Baum I have read said he came up with the name Oz after looking at his file cabinet. Huh
