I used to be otaku when I was in high school, although it was just to the extend of excessive watching,no impulse buying on products though. Anyway,in general,I used to love shounen (teen boys) anime, which is very common. But as time passed,I have met with seinen (young adult men) and jousei (young adult women) genre and both of the genre touched human issues in a deeper sense. I'm more inclined to seinen though as jousei tends to be a deep love story, which I find kinda boring sometimes, but seinen, they are more straight forward and include other genre as a light medium.
So some examples of seinen anime: Aria series (there were like 2-3 seasons and 1-2 OVAs),this one use light humour as medium, and touches a lot about real life values. Also Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, which used magic power as medium, sounds like a bit shounen, but it was kinda deep to understand actually,I read that jaxc watched it? would like your opinion some times
Also, studio ghibli produced the best quality of anime movies in my opinion,I've watched most of their works and they are the works of art.
Currently,I've only been following One Piece and Hunter X Hunter anime, well because both of them illustrate a whole new unique world, which I'm very fond of~ And my time have been largely allocated to english comedy series,so,not much of spare time left for anime~
