Dude I'm a total Frank Herbert fan, I've read all the Dune novels... it took me several years, lol.

Sian Phillips rocked as the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaius_Helen_Mohiam in the movies.

Philip K Dick had one good book in my opinion, that was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the book which the Harrison Ford movie Blade Runner is based off of. Apart from that Isaac Asimov is no doubt my favorite science fiction author, reason being that he was actually first and foremost a scientist so everything which he wrote about reflected that, along with great stories. My favorite of his were the later additions to the Foundation series, especially Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation. Pebble in the Sky from the Empire series was another favorite. And my absolute favorite by him, not part of any series but with subtle connections to all three, The End of Eternity, this is probably my favorite ever science fiction book.

Dune series is fantastic, currently rereading it. Also anything by Heinlen.

I'd have to go with Frank Herbert's Dune series too as my favorite sci-fi books. Mind-blowingly metaphysical stuff!

China Mieville a close second for me. Although I'm sure he would disagree with me branding him a sci-fi writer!
