What book are you reading now?
(I hate to trend, I really do..)

Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins. - Great sequel to a great first book. It's gripping and a pretty easy read with approachable social commentary.

I'm still trying to read The Yiddish Policemen's Society - Michael Chabon. Unlike his earlier works such as The Mysteries of Pittsburgh or (my personal favorite) The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, I'm having trouble with this book. The set-up is quite interesting but I'm having issues understanding Jewish culture references (which is odd because the references to old Jewish stories were easy to follow in Kavalier and Clay.)

Just put down The Folded Leaf by William Maxwell. My first thought after it finishing was, "I have to go to gayspeak." Has anyone else read this one? It was published in 1945 and focuses on a very intimate relationship between two young college boys in the 20's. The exact nature of their relationship is somewhat ambiguous, but I suspect that that is due somewhat to the cultural restrictions of the time in which it was written. Either way, it's a heartbreaking, lyrical book about the difficulty the maturity process in a culture that does not prepare, nor encourage, its children to grow up; something I can relate to very well. Give it a read if you have the chance.

Kubrick's movie is very different from the book, and good in its own right.

Edit: What I'm reading now:

For research:
Rise of the Novel - Ian Watt
Making the English Canon: Print-Capitalism and the Cultural Past, 1700-1770 - Jonathan Kramnick
The Origins of the British Novel - Michael McKeon
How Novels Think - Nancy Armstrong

For enjoyment:
Bel Canto - Anne Pratchett, quite fun, I'm almost done.

'Religion for Atheists' by Alain de Botton. It's a good read, even though I'm only a few chapters into it. I'm agreeing with a lot of what the book says; it's where I am spiritually i.e. it talks about those who admire church architecture, literature, art and music but cannot believe its doctrine. Highly recommended!
