What book are you reading now?
Just started Mark Kermode's It's Only a Movie. I love his reviews on the radio but I'm not too fond of his writing. The book is full of obscure references that often make it incomprehensible and tedious.

Reading Schivelbusch's Disenchanted Night: The Industrialization of light in the 19th century. Reading it for a World Hist. course at UH, just finished Chap II, "The Street," which is a fascinating history of how street lighting came about and why as well as the significant role in played in society as well as uprisings such as the French Revolution. Really interesting stuff. It all starts in the Medieval period with folks being forced to have oil lanterns on the front doors, etc, etc. Now, we take them for granted, but outside lighting a few centuries ago was considered a major invasion of privacy. Who knew? Very easy read and flows along nicely. Well written and full of information. Hey, can I help it if I like history. Probably why I'm a hist. major. But I would not like to have been around during those lantern-smashing episodes.

I've been reading a lot lately! I've finished 'The Great God Pan', 'Norweigan Wood', a biography on The Velvet Underground and the first book from the 1Q84 trilogy. Now I'm going to move on to the second 1Q84 book and I just placed a pretty big order for lots of new books; Naked Lunch and The Monk amongst others. Very excited about it!

It's Only a Movie from my fellow movie geek Mark Kermode is turning out to be better than I expected. Next in line is a book on exorcisms by the controversial Father Gabriele Amorth.
