Compassion and Outreach
True Story- At work, we recently accepted a patient who is a relatively young man. Three years ago he fell three stories and landed on his head. He should have died. But he lived and suffered a traumatic brain injury. His wife became abusive after the accident, probably in response to his personality changes. She divorced him and was put under a restraining order due to domestic abuse. His 16 year old daughter held the family together for three years, caring for her father and for her 10 year old brother, before they entered our program. They received very little support because the father was legally the head of household and if they had tried to change that, the family probably would have been split and the kids put in foster care. Our social worker and dietitian went to their house and found that the daughter had kept them alive this past winter by selling off all of their possessions. They had a single package of Ramen noodles and a can of beans in their house. I put out a call to my sister who contacted her church. They responded with box after box of food for the family. The outpouring was unbelievable! Our social worker, is currently working to get this family stabilized, but we have all been completely floored by the response of people who were complete strangers to this family. As for me, just when I have reached a high point in my cynicism with humanity, something happens to restore my faith. I just wanted to share that here. Thanks.
