Two words: Personal Trainer.
I hired a PT in January 2013 and have lost 6 kgs (12 lbs, I believe) ever since. I started with 81 kgs (I'm 1,74m tall, so I was technically obese) and now I weigh 75 kgs. It's not spectacular but it's good and I'm really proud of myself.
I wish I had done it sooner. Here are some of the benefits of a PT:
1 - Motivation: There's no such thing as 'I don't feel like going to the gym this morning' You paid for it, you simply HAVE to go or you'll be throwing your hard-earned money out the window.
2 - Knowing what to do: only a professional knows for sure what exercises are right for you. Spending x hours in the gym is not enough and some exercises can actually do more harm than good.
3 - Doing it the right way: Once you know what the right exercises are, you need to do them the right way and, again, you're going to need an extra pair of eyes to help you with this.
Yes, it's expensive but it's worth every cent. The real waste of money would be to spend less and see zero results.
I'm not on a strict diet but I have taken some extra precautions when it comes to food: no sodas, no junk food, no fruit juices, less carbs.
