Lalo Wrote:Side note- We both earlier proclaimed our love for Jannelle Monae's "Archandroid". Well, for me, the reason why that album is so exceptional is because it is much like a Beatle's album. Yes there are the pop hits, but the rest of the album is also innovative and rich with talent. That type of musical endeavor had never been seen before the Beatles. And THAT is what makes them great.

PS- when most people discuss the Beatles, they come at the subject from what they have heard- meaning their biggest "pop" hits. Now I don't know what your exposure has been, however, I would recommend sitting down and listening to these albums all the way through: The White Album, Sgt Pepper, Revolver and Rubber Soul. Also look up books or even Google "Why are the Beatles important musically?" and you will find tons of material. Soooo... I hope that you take a second look at the Beatles, and read why they are important to rock and roll.

:flirty-thank-you-sm

The point is that now, what makes the Beatles a "famous" band is their greatests hits that were nice, but really not exceptionnal in comparison to other bands or not known tracks of them.

I will add that while I love much of their stuff and think they were awesome in general, that they had their misses to go along with the hits. Fool on the Hill and Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da make me want to strangle Macca. Mr. Kite has some interesting sound sampling going on but it doesn't do anything other songs didn't do better, and lyrically/musically it's kind of a throwaway. Sgt. Pepper should have had Strawberry Fields on it.

Both "Fool On The Hill" and "Ob La Di" were Paul's creations. (Personally I like them both, but that's just me) I think that this actually points out another strength of the band, and in fact, the strength of all bands, which is the combined group of individual talents, as a whole, is sometimes more powerful than the some of its parts. After all, I don't think anyone would say that any of the Beatles were the best at any particular instrument. But together they did do some awesome stuff.

That's probably my favorite album by the Smiths apart from the Hatful of Hollow compilation. I think that one is my favorite release of theirs.

Unless you're talking about a completely different album with the exact same name :p
