I know a guy who can't cross a bridge because of the heights. He told me he wasn't acrophobic until age 14 (though he said he had an acrophobic nightmare a year or so earlier) when he was chasing his nephew up a stadium and the view from several stories up froze him in terror. His unsympathetic family made him keep going to their seats and once there, though far away from the ledge, he literally clung to some seating rails as the fear was so intense though there was no danger at all of falling, but knowing that didn't make the terror go away.
And that, to me, is an actual phobia.

I just thought of another one: the drain in a sink.
it's just horrible, I hate the idea of a drain. I hate to look at it. That;s why I never brush my teeth while in the bathroom, I go outside the bathroom to do it. I guess it's the yucky germophobia but still the idea of such a dark confined tube... it just freaks me out. especially after reading this: http://slug-chicks.blogspot.co.nz/p/groa...i-ito.html

I am afraid of heights, once when I was at camp as a kid I froze clinging to a tree about 30ft up for almost an hour. I was supposed to be doing the zip line but when I got up there I was required to take a HUGE step around the tree onto the platform and just froze. The counselors ended up convincing me to do the zip line by telling me that my only other option would be to climb down, and that actually wasn't so bad.
I also hate the long walk leading up to a roller coaster along the grated steps and platform, being that high up and being able to see through what you're standing on is such a terrible feeling! Again though, once I'm in the coaster and moving I'm fine.

I don't know if there is a name for it..fear of crashing in an airplane. Not fear of flying...fear of crashing. The last time I flew was when I had to attend a funeral of a family member in 2011. I was on the edge of my seat all across country, even on the red-eye and a valium.

Spiders, scat, western medicine...in that order.

Hmm...
Acrophobia - Fear of Heights Arachnophobia - Fear of Spiders It's not even that I'm necessarily afraid of either really. I'm not scared of heights in of itself, I'm just scared of falling from said heights and dying. Kingda Ka was an interesting experience as a result. Likewise spiders don't scare me so much as freak me out; especially the big ones. Nothing warrants evolving to need 8 legs...ever.

Taphophobia - fear of being buried alive. I think it's one of most horrible things that could happen to a person.

Personally, I'm xenophobic. I don't like things that are different from my culture. I'm working on that, though.
