I never read Carrie, but I watched the movie for the first time last night, and I think I realize why his books translate so poorly: screenplay writers that adapt his books want to be true to the story, when in fact a film functions better when the horror comes as an inexplicable surprise...it's one thing to read a book and know that something bad is about to happen to someone that doesn't know, it's another thing to watch it happen without the narrative for support.
