do it in person, just remember that its bigger in your head than it will be in actuality.
personally i'd organize catching up but say that you have something planned at a set time after, if things go well you can say that you will just cancel and do what ever you were going to do at a different time and if things go badly at least you have a reason for ending the awkward moment without having to make up an excuse on the fly.
IE plan to catch up in the afternoon and say that there was a movie you thinking of going to see later on, if things go badly you can say you have to go to buy tickets, if things go well you can turn your movie night into a date.
