French high-schoolers chose this design for the new Marianne stamp. Modern, and pretty. Does she represent the values we believe in?
New symbol of liberty?

Whenever I see Marianne I can only think of The Terror of the 1790's.

Hah! Marianne has always been pretty. And proud. On the stamp her expression is timid and the style is a cross between art nouveau(girls almost always have weeds in their hair) and Japanese manga which makes little sense.

The story is in the news at the moment. The artist who drew her took inspiration from one of the FEMEN (though Inna Shevchenko is not French but Ukrainian) as he wanted a woman who was ready to fight (even naked) for freedom. It's not been appreciated by some, (guess who!) as was to be expected.
The weeds in her hair, no doubt, are olive tree twigs, symbols of peace. The oak tree at the bottom is probably to show permanence... I don't know all the details, only what I heard on the news (BBC Radio Four last night, The World Tonight : http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/b036v9hs ) Olivier Ciappa's English is very good, albeit with a slight French accent - I assure you, it's charming. Here's a link to an article in French explaining the furore and his choice: http://www.huffingtonpost.fr/olivier-cia...97677.html And here's what this artist has also done to further gay rights. An exhibition of photographs called COUPLES IMAGINAIRES. http://yagg.com/2013/06/27/emotion-et-mi...er-ciappa/ |
