Famous one liners
#1
Prompted by the "Famous last words" thread, some one liners are too good and Oscar Wilde is an endless source:

I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.

A thing is not necessarily true because a man dies for it.

Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.

A poet can survive everything but a misprint.

We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.

le mystère de l'amour est plus grand que le mystère de la mort.
The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death.

I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works.

People who count their chickens before they are hatched act very wisely because chickens run about so absurdly that it's impossible to count them accurately.

It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating.

Prayer must never be answered: if it is, it ceases to be prayer and becomes correspondence.

Wasn't it Wilde who referred to the fox-hunting English upper classes as 'the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable'?

Yes, the full phrase is: “The English country gentleman galloping after a fox—the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable. ”

An ounce of performance is worth pounds of promises.

It takes two to get one in trouble.

I like restraint, if it doesn't go too far.

A dame that knows the ropes isn't likely to get tied up.

Those who are easily shocked should be shocked more often.

You may admire a girl's curves on the first introduction, but the second meeting shows up new angles.

All discarded lovers should be given a second chance, but with somebody else.

Virtue has its own reward, but no box office.

Women are as old as they feel and men are old when they lose their feelings.

Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly.

Women with "pasts" interest men because men hope that history will repeat itself.

When women go wrong, men go right after them.

I consider sex a misdemeanor, the more I miss, de meaner I get.

There are no good girls gone wrong, just bad girls found out.

Love conquers all things… except poverty and toothache.

Give a man a free hand and he'll run it all over you.

I'm single because I was born that way.

Love thy neighbor… and if he happens to be tall, debonair and devastating, it will be that much easier.

No gold-digging for me… I take diamonds!

Men are my hobby; if I ever got married I'd have to give it up.

You're never too old to become younger.
