FLIES.

Three days ago my flat became infested with flies, first just a few, which i dispatched. I didnt think much of it, since it was a hot day. I went out and came back around 7pm, they were everywhere, i completely freaked out, swatting them all over the damn place, then i became aware of a noise above my head, they had congressed on the light shade in the ceiling light fitting, i tried ushering them away but they just wouldnt leave it, so in a pure moment of hysteria i began trying to unscrew the light shade, i couldnt.get at them with that there.

Yeah, once actually. I was disconnecting the cooker hob and got a nice jolt and the main switch tripped. I'd switched off the power to the kitchen but some idiot must have wired the hob directly to the main supply. I said many things about that person, none of them repeatable here.

So this isnt an easy job with flies buzzing around my head and the fitting, i was panicking, rushing, not thinking (clearly)

SHOCK

I though a gigantic fly was buzzing in my hand, but why was my fist clenched around it?

A strange sensation, it wasnt a huge flie, i had my hand wrapped around exposed wires etc

For maybe 5 seconds this huge "flie" buzzed in my right hand, then i can only say my hand seemed to explode, something shot up my arm, it all happened quickly, i remember realising i was being electrocuted, as it shot up my arm i thought "this is it" but it dissapated about halfway up my arm

Then i just sat there amazed as i felt tingling electricity traveling along both arms, i called ambulence, i had to say it wasnt an emergency but they sent a guy, this black paramedic called winston, who checked my heart etc, all good! He was a really nice guy, except when i had to take those sticky patches of my arm, do they use superglue, it really hurt! lol but we had a joke about how i could now turn on streetlamps just by touching them, he left after half hour, the tingling funny feelings calmed down by 11pm. Yeah thats about it.

There are some Southern "home remedies" for keeping flies out of the house......

1. get a "ziploc" baggie, any size, fill it with tap water and hang it near doors and windows.
Supposedly, the ions in the water keep them away. This is why you never see flies hovering over water.


2. there are plug in "zappers" of all sorts you can buy for the home, from actual electric zappers to the electronic frequency zappers.

3. go around your home and caulk all of the little areas that flies might squeeze through/add weather stripping.....around window frames, doorways, pretty much any place that goes from the outside to the inside.

4. you can use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to suck up the flies and dispose of them outside. Be sure to clean your vacuum with a antibacterial cleaner afterwards, as flies are dirty and they can leave a stink.

5. get some pure sulphur powder. This can be found at home improvement places and places that sell plants and plant products. Sprinkle some powder around all doors and windows (on the outside)....if not all the way around the OUTSIDE of the home. Sulphur is the all natural "bug spray". It might smell for a day or two, but the smell will subside. You have to re-powder every month or after it has rained or snowed. If you start to get yellow buildup in those areas, it can be scrubbed off with warm water and a stiff brush....wait till it dries and re-powder.












6. this is another "home remedy" for any flying insects......get one canning jar with lid (pictured below).
Punch 2 holes in the top lid, just barely big enough for a fly to get into.
Inside the jar, put 2 Tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of vinegar. Screw the lid on the jar tightly and set the jar where flys will be the most prevalent (window sills, doorways, the kitchen, the bathroom, etc....). Flys like the "sweet n sour" smell and will be drawn to it, as will other flying insects. They get stuck in the jar. When the jar has a lot of insects in it, throw the jar away and make a new one.
Simple home remedy that is safe and non toxic. These can also work outside, but not as effective.

.Thanks mistertinkles, i already did no.3 and it has subsided, yesterday was better and today was even better again, there were only 4 but they were BIGGER! I keep squashing them with scrunched up loo roll and flushing them away.

This is a one-off and my neighbour and i think a bird has died in the space between, he heard scratching noises for a couple of days and when it stopped, the flies began, there favourite place is the window, im going to take your advice with the sulpher, thanks.

Yeah, thats happened to me several times.

I would suggest that if you are going to write a long post, do it in Word, then copy and paste onto here. That way if the site loses it or it doesnt post, then you dont have to write it all over again. Just copy and paste again.

Because i use a mobile phone i cant access some things you can on the computer, most over forums are mobile-freindly, except this one. Its only the longer posts that are deleted, like the one just now.

Theres not many flies left but im taking your advice on the sulphur powder, ive already done option 3

I use sulphur powder on the outside around door frames and window sills, because theres a big gnat and ant problem in the place I live. Keeps the little buggers out.

I use those plug-in electronic "sconic" bug zappers inside. Seems to work, although the occasional gnat does come in once in a while.

Sulphur works good for flies, gnats, roaches, waterbugs, snails, etc. Also works for lizards. It repels them. And sulphur is good for your lawn too, so it wont hurt anything.

If you have outside plants, you can mix it with water and put it in a spray bottle and spray your plants too. Just dont make it too strong, it will "burn" the leaves.
