I was in the Military from 1992 to 1995 and I was very much in the closet at the time and was 18 when I went in and I was like 23 when I came out of the closet but by the time I was 18 I was very much interested in guys and just kept it a deep deep dark secret but I found myself very drawn to other guys when I was in Basic training and we would be in the showers that were pretty open and you could easily look across and see the other guy lathering up and soaping himself up and I would check out other guys bodies without looking too much like a creeper.

Mmm... basic training. I remember the showers well. The rest was... whatever. And I don't know if I'd be specifically drawn to other military guys like that, but I wouldn't avoid them either. I guess it doesn't really matter to me as long as they're cool. However, it was too bad that the don't ask, don't tell thing was still around back then. I would have dated other military men while I was in... if I wasn't also married at the time. Oh well.

No experience here but listening to some soldiers talk it sounds like there are A LOT of sexual freaks who can't keep it in their pants in the military, and wow can some get kinky (though all I've heard has been heterosexual in nature). One told me that some had to run because they'd snuck up to the women's barracks (and IIRC, this was basic training, too) and one went in and started kissing on one of them sleeping. She responded by kissing back so another went in but the woman HE woke up reacted much more negatively and all the guys had to run. By the way, the first time I heard of anal beads was listening to some old Vietnam Vets talk about what they did during R&R/I&I (Intoxication & Intercourse), said the others didn't know what they were missing as he described it in pornographic detail in admiration for Vietnamese prostitutes.
Russia, OTOH, is very strange. They're a very sexist, homophobic society but apparently hazing in the military (which was, and maybe still is, mandatory for males) included man on man sexual abuse. I asked a Russian about why so many soldiers were shooting up their own units and he described it in detail. I'm so glad I don't have to live in Russia as a woman, as a lesbian, and with a children there male or female!

I'm navy and it is still very open for showering. Somewhat homophobic but very gay acting straight people. It is weird to say the least.

The stories I could tell... I joined the Navy in 1973 and stayed until I retired in 1993.
I remember two buddies in Boot Camp who had sex in the showers one time - after everyone else finished showering for the day. I also remember being propositioned by the guy who slept in the bunk next to me in Boot Camp. I won't go into detail, as it might destroy the angelic image I've portrayed all these years!!!!
While deployed overseas in the mid 70's,,, a gay friend of mine was fooling around with a married guy. When we pulled into a foreign port, these two guys would get a hotel room and have fun together. The married guy went back to his wife after we returned to the States,, so that Bromance came to an end.
Prior to AIDS, there were many short term couplings between seemingly straight men and gay men. In fact, it was safer for a straight man to have sex with a gay man,,, instead of the straight guy going to the whore houses overseas and catching a venereal disease and accidentally bringing it back home to his wife. Or!!!! the wife accidentally finding out that her husband was having sex with whores while overseas,,, which did happen sometimes.
