Rom-coms - love them or hate them? WARNING: contains spoilers of Notting Hill
#1
I just wanted to ask whether everyone likes or dislikes rom-coms?

I've seen a few. Some of them are the big ones including Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill and some of the lesser known ones including a French rom-com called Poubées Russe (Russian dolls) and personally I can say I absolutely hate them. They're full of unrealistic sentimental bullshit. The last one I saw Poubées Russe made me wanna gag towards the end. It was so clichéd it was absurd. I am a bit disappointed because I love French films and was hoping they'd write something a little better than this. It showed promise and then became so full of clichés and sentimental garbage I just gave up.

Notting Hill is just as silly with a celeb just happening to meet some random fan by (guess what) bumbing into him resulting in him spelling his orange juice all over her. As a result of their totally random meeting a long sequence of events happen and she treats him badly and they go their own ways. She then goes to give a press conference before leaving London for LA at which point the fan (William) realises he made a mistake and a wacky chase scene across London ensues which results in him pretending to be journalist to get into the press conference and he makes a grovelling apology in front of the world, when really she's just an arrogant bitch and he shouldn't have to apologise, and she reconsiders her decision and stays in London where they live happily ever after (quelle surprise)! Ugh pass the bucket...

sorry this has gone on longer than I thought. Anyway what does everyone make of rom-coms? Do you like them or loathe them and why?

I don't mind romantic dramas or thrillers but rom-coms with sentimental bullshit grind my gears (to quote Peter Griffin)!

I watch Romantic Comedies mostly because there really
isn't much on or I need a good laugh. The Romantic bit
at times gets super cheesy and unrealistic though, hehe

Like for instance the last one that really made me roll my
eyes was 'Friends with Benefits' that movies with Justin
Timberlake in it..? So dumb.

But on the other hand there are some Romantic Comedies
that emphasize more on the Comedy aspect and those I
can appreciate cause it's just too funny.

'The Sweetest Thing' comes to mind with Cameron Diaz. I watched it again
awhile ago cause it takes place in San Francisco and I was
missing San Fran a lot at that time. It's a really funny movie, imo ;D

Buut! There are a few Romantic Comedies that I genuinely like, like
'Never Been Kissed' with Drew Barrymore. It's one of those movies
where when I first saw it, I could really relate to the main character
and could understand the things she was going through.

Glad you specified "romantic comedy".........
I thought "rom com" was a disease or something.

Two of my fav's is "Never Been Kissed" and "50 First Dates".

I like the unusual/quirky ones... sometimes. Like (500) Days of Summer. It's not really a Rom-Com per se, but it's about as close as I'll willingly go.

Saying that, if someone else wants to watch one, I'll go along with it - and I don't hate them or anything. Just not something I'd really choose to watch.

Sorry I should've explained what rom-coms actually were. I probably didn't make that clear. It's a term which may not always be used in other countries outside the UK.

But yeah it means 'romantic comedy'.

I forgot Friends with Benefits. I am not going to see that film because it looks so stupid. I mean its basically just a guy and girl fucking without being in a relationship.. that's it! It looks stupid. Seems too much like American Pie to me! Which is another film I detest

^Well, they end up having feelings for each other.

So hence it 'complicates' their arrangements, lol

Maybe. still FWB sounds like a dumb film. Nothing clever or amusing about it. I'll give it a miss.
