David Cameron's knowledge of history

According to Cameron, Margaret Thatcher was the greatest peace time Prime Minister the UK has ever had. "Peace time"?. Well, if the Falkland's conflict was peace, I don't even want to imagine what "war" is like.

Given that, here in America, this is still considered "peace time"...with all those conflicts over in the middle east.

He was young at the time. The government had become very unpopular in the early eighties, the monetarist experiment was failing and unemployment was high. What we needed was a good war, we got one and thatcher won the next election. So Cameron probably sees it as less of a war and more of an election campaign.

footnotes department: The Tories' share of the vote was actually lower (by about 1.5%) in 1983 than in 1979, they won because the opposition was split by the Lib-SDP Alliance

Hey Londoner!

I recently read a book about HMS CONQUEROR - the Nuclear Submarine that sank the Argentine Cruiser, Belgrano.

"SECRETS OF THE CONQUEROR - The Untold Story of Britain's Most Famous Submarine." by Stuart Prebble. Faber and Faber, ISBN: 9780571290338

It seems that the hu-ha over the sinking on the Belgrano was a convenient smokescreen for the government of the day as to what that Submarine was *really* up to.
