Homophobia

TonyAndonuts Wrote:Do you guys think Orson Scott Card (author of Ender's Game) is gay based on his very open hatred of homosexuals?

It might show you that I thanked you for that post, which makes no sense, I clicked it by mistake. Consequently I feel obligated to respond now....

He might be --- but based on homophobia alone it's hard to tell. Often, the trick is to get someone into a real discussion... often when the person vehemently proposes homosexuality as a "choice", while simulutaniously displaying a complete lack of knowledge on what homosexuality is, you realize they are using personal experience to articulate their feelings... which sometimes accidently reveals a bisexual person...

Of course, the other route of finding out if a homophobic person has homosexual tendancies is to watch their penis when they see gay porn, as happened in this study.

I have neither the ability nor desire to watch Card's penis, and I don't have access to extensive conversations that he's had in regards to gay issues.

So I have to say... Really, I have no idea...His religion is playing a role, his upbringing is playing a role, his basic personality (He has a few scenes in his book that are 'insensitive' to gay people... I'm saying this a someone that was a fan and reader of Ender's Game), and his politics.... so he is a layered person, and his reasons for homophobia are also likely layered....

It's also a crying shame that he's homophobic.... A theme of his book is the consequences that acting without understanding a person can cause... One can just hope that the meaning in his book lives on past his petty attitude towards other people.

There's a difference IMO between passive and aggressive homophobes. Those who are passive probably haven't thought it through. Those who obsess about it, however, are a different matter and it begs the question of why this is such a burning issue for them. That they're closeted homosexuals is certainly one possibility, and it's known to happen because a few have admitted they were the biggest gay bashers until they accepted themselves.

But other possibilities also exist, perhaps the biggest or next biggest one being shamed for some kind of sexual immorality (such as repeated adultery, compulsive masturbation that fills them with guilt, or even child molesting) and trying to feel better about themselves by putting someone else down ("I may not be perfect but I'm still better than THEM").

Other possibilities include playing people (that is for politics and/or money by going after a devil, in this case the devil being homosexuality, but they don't really care about it, they just want money and/or power they can squeeze out of homophobes, though there can be a level of sincerity there all the same) or some sort of trauma (anywhere from a parent who left who stopped pretending to be straight to being molested by a pedophile of the same sex).
