I understood him to have a serious drinking problem. That usually indicates something is broken.

Yes, from what I have seen about Mel over the years, he's only a prick when he's been drinking (which is most of the time), but he seems to be pleasant when he's completely sober (which seems to be rare).

Also, fame and fortune does turn a lot of nice people into raving sociopaths.
Hollywood tends to have this effect on a lot of nice people.....turning them into sexist, bigoted, rage machines.

I think something happened to him back in the early 1990's that made him "snap".
And people are just too afraid of him to confront him about it.

And yes, he was a hottie "back when".

I watched Apocalypto but never thought of it as racist , just a movie about different civilisations ,, which got really good reviews too - I do like Mels films,, specially Mad Max , as for him personally - I suppose it gets into the area of freedom of speech - he's his own worst enemy really - as long as hes not promoting violence against the groups hes doesn't like then I don't care - I just wont read his tabloid interviews - wasn't he brought up with a dad who was very religious though !! almost cult type - sure I read that but it could be gossip
