My favourite musical, Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" was far, far better on stage than on film. My favourite performance is by Hannah Waddingham in a performance I saw at the Meunier Chocolate Factory in London directed by Trevor Nunn and this is a very obvious pirate recording.




In spite of the singularly bad camerawork and the deficient sound, it still comes over exactly as the character of Desiree should; as a resigned, world weary woman who knows she has lost. Read tghe comments below the video.

There have been hundreds and hundreds of recordings of this song sung by some pretty famous singers but who have absolutely no idea what they are singing about. Judy Collins make it in to a dirge, Barbara Streisland emotes all over the place (as usual) and Frank Sinatra admitted publicly that he didn't know what the song meant. Hannah Waddingham is an actress who does know what the song means.

Thanks GordShumALF, I'm glad you agree. When you think of the film versions with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Elizabeth Taylor neither of them could sing in any case, this is why I chose the stage version.

I saw Peter Pan on Broadway with Sandy Duncan, and that was fantastic. Also saw Cats at Lincoln Center, and Sweeny Todd at Circle in the Square Theater. Peter Pan had the biggest impact on me, as I was only a child at the time, but the majesty and enormity of Cats was truly overwhelming. I'm gonna go with Cats.
