The biggest news this week is the release of former Colombian presidential candidate,Ingrid Betancourt from FARC captivity.No doubt a victory for Presidents Velez & Sarkozy.It will be very interesting to see whether she'll pursue her presidential dreams after her biggest enemy orchestrated her release.It's also been 6 years since her been taken hostage and no doubt,the Colombian & international politics have changed.I believe it would be better for her to play a mediator between the goverment and the rebel group,FARC.With their most important hostage gone,FARC is now in a weak position,what's next for them?

What's next for them? Well, it's been on the news for two days, without a pause, so it appears that Pres Sarkozy has even offered to welcome FARC members as political exiles? I don't know what to think. :confused: Glad she is free of course, and for her family the end of a long long wait, however there are still other hostages held back there.

Ingrid has just arrived in France, she's making a speech on the radio right now. Very dignified, very moving. The fight against injustice is not over yet. A remarkable woman who's kept her faith in the humanity of the world. Negotiation is the master word here.

Impressed with how she fluently used Spanish in Bogota and then French in Paris.It looks like Ingrid has no immediate political plans for the future as she desires to spend more time with her leader.The French Socialist party leader (PA,help me out) has suggested that Sarkozy played no part in the rescue mission and is just hogging the spotlight,not hard to believe after today's photo op.And the rumours that a ransom of 20 million was given to FARC in exchange for the 14 hostages?Hmmm...

cant add all that much to the discussion but they are denying the ransom. I forget who was speaking but they said they would have paid FARC 100 million for a safe return of the hostages.

It was a rather cleaver ruse what they did... now the curiosity is over here about why John McCain was consulted on the matter???

I have n o idea why he was consulted either but isn't it very convenient that John McCain was in Colombia at the same time?Lest we not forget the influence that Ingrid has on Latino Americans,a minority group that could be a gold mine for the presidential candidates.So John McCain has had a role liberating their idol,Ingrid Betancourt so the pressure is kind of mounting on The Rack.

Is deviousness at play here? It's difficult to work out what is genuine and what isn't. Our socialist former candidate to the presidency said something to the effect that Pres Sarkozy had nothing to do with Ingrid's liberation which sparked great annoyance in the opposition, of course. Ingrid, herself in her speech thanked Nicolas for his dealing with this, but also all the support groups that had worked hard for 6 years trying to get her freed... So there are things which we will not be informed about until much much later.

I believe that it has been reported that the USA military was consulted. Maybe some equipment was borrowed.

CNN ran a very long, five hours or so, of the history of the past six/seven years. Just amazing of what I saw. What a drama...
