Debating
#1
How many of you enjoy debating ?

I enjoy the cut and thrust of discussing things respectfully with a peer, but I find many debates fall flat on their faces because people debase themselves by stooping to insults or pettiness ...

The idea of a debate on debating appeals to my quirky sense of humour Confusedmile:.

 at quirky sense of humour.I too enjoy a substantial debate. When I was a kid,I wanted to join the debate society but couldn't bring myself to try out.I'm careful not to enter any debates that concern race and religion though.I hate it when one guy wants to be the only voice in the debate!

I find the views of other people fascinating. Sometimes they say things that provoke me to respond. I don't actually enjoy arguing, but I do like to get to a point in a discussion where I think I have expressed my thoughts as well as I can and in return I have developed some understanding of what the other person is saying. I realise that when my interest is aroused my search for that understanding can appear rather "robust", but we all have a choice as to whether we carry on the discussion or not. If I have said what I need to say and the other person is in repeat mode I tend to drop out of the discussion.

Dan, that takes out most of the fun in debating... most dont like talking politics either but I see are very good at that.

During Uni I just loved debating EVERYTHING. I had such smart friends. They opened my mind to so many things and I was pretty happy when I was able to change their minds on something too - though that was never the goal.

I always tried to listen to the speaker before making any kind of judgement or response. I found that is a good method to debate. Many are already thinking what they are going to say and miss the others argument. I could usually win an argument by reminding someone what they just said.

Babe it was actually you that I was thinking of when I wrote my original post on this topic.

I do very much enjoy discussing things with you, as you are always respectful, considerate, and at the same time forthright and direct with your opinion, which is always considered. You're great fun to pit wits (not against, but) with (if that can even be considered an expression - perhaps collaborate with ? Discuss things with ??).

Nevermind -.
