I used to clear coat my nails on a regular basis. Of course that was to protect my nails from the type of dirty work I did. I used a non-glossy product that in theory strengthens nails.

Perhaps you should start using that with the purpose being to strengthen your nails... then slowly introduce color once the family gets used to the idea that you clear coat your nails....
