In the financial year 2011-2012 the UK Government managed to find £17 Billion to send to countries with flush toilet.
Actually the majority of Indians
don't have flush toilets.
Like most 3rd world/emerging economies, the difference between the haves and the have-nots is substantial.
The have-nots are earning under $1.00 a day, the haves are in their fast cars and luxury housing, and pay their low caste servants an absolute pittance.
The problem is that in a country with a population of 1.3 BILLION, thats an awful lot of have-nots, remembering that there is no social welfare programs to catch those at the bottom.
Having said that, I don't disagree with your sentiment. The UK has to get smarter with its overseas aid programs. Corruption is the biggest problem, and thats not easy to stamp out.
Personally I actually support the UKIP position (never thought Id be saying that!!) Scrap HS2, which only benefits a small slice of the UK economy, and instead earmark those funds to upgrade the SW Train route into Devon and Cornwall, with the rest going to bolster flood defences.
Just my view
