Advice about seeking employment...
#1
Hello Everyone,

I am posting this in hopes of getting some advice about what places people look at when they look for jobs. I've graduated college since september and haven't been able to find a job in my field. I live in Chicago, Illinois. The places I look at daily are Craigslist, Indeed.com, NPO.net(nonprofit opportunities). I've also tried to find something outside of my field such as caregiving, babysitting, pet sitting/walking and no luck so far. My field is accounting and I'm mainly looking for an entry level part time position in the nonprofit sector preferably since my accounting internship took place with a nonprofit.

Where do you all look? Where do you suggest I look? I would really appreciate some solid advice. Keep in mind I live in Chicago.

Thanks

Hey, I'm not sure if you're Spam or not, but here I go..!

I'm sure you've looked into it all cause I have and I kind of get annoyed
when people repeat advice/places that I've already checked at.

Have you tried inquiring at local banks? They're usually always hiring, I
remember they used to post temp jobs specially during the summer time.

I know that Healthcare places also hire and look for accountants so maybe
you can try to check that field too?

Also, if you applied for a job in accounting and they tell you that their not
hiring at the moment or if they're looking for people with more experience ask
them if they're willing to let you shadow someone for at least a week or even a
couple of days for free. It might not seem much and it's for free, but you can put that
in your resume/application.

I hope this helps a bit, or at least give you some ideas. I know how hard and
frustrating it is to look at endless ads online and apply to seemingly never ending
job applications and never get a call back or worse get turned down cause you
don't have experience.

Best of luck Smile

You should be able to get some leads for jobs through the college you went to. You just need to go to talk to a career counselor.

Since you are looking for part time work, you should look into Temp Agencies/Staffing Agencies.

Accountemps is a large staffing company that deals in accounting and payroll.

Robert Half Staffing is the parent company of Accountemps, but you can also go through the Robert Half offices.

Look on the Workforce Commission website for you state/area (also known as the unemployment office). You can also get a list of job related websites from them, so you can go looking on your own.

Other temp agencies are:

Randstad
Manpower
Cornerstone
Aerotek
Office Team
Kelly Services
AppleOne

Those are the only ones I know of that are across the country. But you should search online for "staffing services" or "temp agencies" in your area.

Also, look online at accounting firms and companies, payroll companies, and CPA companies.

Don't limit yourself to one small position type, you are cutting off your chances to find something better and possibly more pay.

Also, you may want to register on Linkedin.com. You might have to have someone show you how to work that site, as you have to "connect" with people in order for them to see your resume on there. But its supposed to be the "hottest" way for employers to find employees right now. It wouldn't hurt.

Dont forget Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com either.

The first and most important thing that people never think of, especially young people who thing that a college/Uni degree will buy them a job (Which 99.9% of the time is bullshit and the paper the degree is written on is worth less than used shit paper)

TO FIND A JOB YOU HAVE TO HAVE A JOB

People who start working as soon as they are legally allowed to work (14years and 9 months old in Australia) and continue to work and study are more likely to find a job at the end of their studying life that will lead to a career.

2nd most important thing...If you are looking for a job, ALWAYS as to meet the manager, don't leave your resume at the business and ask it to be passed on to the manager. I have instructed my staff if anyone turns and leaves their resume, tell the person to come back and hand it to the manager. If they still insist on leaving their resume, then they are to bin it. If someone is serious about getting a job they will dress up, present themselves and talk with the manager/business owner.

3rd...Know as much as you possibly can about the business and industry when you apply for a job...you have the internet for dog's sakes, research research and research, because if I ask you a question and you answer 'I don't know', that is were your chances of getting a job end.

Wink good luck

My modest experience showed me that the main thing to do was to dare. And I lost lot of time with that.
Yeah, just dare to apply by dozen and dozen, even if you're sure you have no chance in a specific company.

Sorry to hear you're finding it hard to find work. It's a similar story here, quite a lot of graduates are still seeking employment after leaving university. It really is a harsh environment out there. Just hang in there! You'll make it Smile

Im not sure Craiglist is the best place to look for a job. You really need to get yourself onto some of the specialist recruitment web sites.

How about:

http://www.illinoisworknet.com/vos_porta...JobSearch/

http://www.snagajob.com/states/il

http://chicago.employmentguide.com/EG/br...bsnew.html

Dont limit yourself to only NFP jobs.

Good luck.
