It's a tradition, especially in the UK, to play some sort of hoax on the 1st of April. Probably one of the most famous was made by the BBC in 1957 in which they produced a pseudo serious documentary on the spahetti harvest. They even called on the services of a very well known journalist, Richard Dimbleby, to do the voice over and give it an air of authority.
