I always figured it developed because the bigger guy could kick the smaller guy's ass if it came down to it?

I mean, totally not right to stereotype because of that, but that's how its always seemed to me that is the reason behind the assumptions.

The term "twink" has evolved..... I am not even sure what it means now but years ago it was NOT a nice thing to refer to someone as a twink.

True and years ago I remember it being a word used by older men to refer to much younger men, either by those who were attracted to young men or by those not into younger men to indicate they found them immature and annoying. Today many young men seem to embrace the word.
