What's on Your Mind
MikeW Wrote:I had no idea, obviously, and appreciate the detailed reply. I'm very sorry to hear you're having to deal with all that. I hope the surgery corrects the problem and you're finally able to live normally.

Thank you for your well wishes Smile

I really can't even imagine what you're going through. Sounds horrid. I'm old and dealing with a lot of crazy shit but *at least* I get to sleep! I can't imagine what I'd do if I couldn't.

I'm not going to lie - it's incredibly difficult and no way to live a life. It's like a slow torture. I try to stay positive and enjoy the small pleasures I can. So I'm used to living in this mindset and am hoping that it will be a good skill even when I have a more normal life.

Good luck with the interview, good luck with the surgery, and for all of us who have gained weight, good luck with the diets! LOL

Sleep apnea is the interruption of sleep due to the blocking of the airway. This happens when the throat muscles and soft tissues collapse to 'clog' the air passage. It affects a large number of people and is usually treated by wearing a mask connected to a ventilator which pumps air in to keep the throat open. The setup is called continuous postive air pressure or CPAP.

When I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, the sleep study found that I was having air blockage as many as 47 times an hour and up to more than 30 seconds each time.

A great danger with sleep apnea is that the heart is burdened and you are deprived of oxygen. It is serious stuff.

Restless leg movement is often associated with this and I wake in the morning to find the mattress skewed off the foundation by as much as a foot. Have just begun taking a medicine for neuropathy in my legs in feet which is helping me to settle and sleep. Odd and wonderful new sensation.

BHP91126, obviously the solution is strawberry. To be more serious, I have been dealing with my sweets craving [constant plague!] by eating unsugared fruits like strawberries, blueberries and cherries. Yes, the are sweet, but the fiber and lack of fat are a help.

Mike W., excellent post. I can identify.

LJAY - the family I grew up with have 3 members with sleep apnea - I know they where oxygen masks and are monitored through the night , and have alarms etc that wake them if they don't breath for a certain amount of time ,, don't know the exact details ..not a fun thing to have at all
