If you could choose one language to speak fluently...

I choose Finnish... because I intend to live in Finland one day and though the people speak English well, the instructions for everything are written in Finnish, obviously.

If I could learn American Sign Language I would. Here in Fremont California we have a large school for the deaf and a very high population of deaf people. It would be nice to have a conversation with some of them when they come into my shop.

English has a lot of use I guess... a lot of folks seem to speak it, even if it is rather clumsy and tonally uninspiring. If I were picking based on pure aesthetics I'd choose French. It's strange that such a beautiful language is named with such an ugly, coarse word... at least for the English name.

I'm actually trying to learn French a bit with duolingo.com. It's pretty fun! Although since I'm not hearing anyone speak it my pronunciation is going to be absolutely shit. But at least I'll be able to read some basic French.... I hope.

Language learning is one of the things that I love, I'd spend entire days, weeks, months, trying to learn a new language. I'm an Italian native speaker, I speak English very well, I'm a good French speaker, but there are so many languages out there that I'd love to learn: Spanish (which I speak a little), German, Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian...

If you want to hear people speaking the language, try livemocha. It's free, there's audio on all of their lessons, and they have a system where you can even interact with native speakers if you want. I'm using it to work on trying to learn Finnish. Smile

Welsh or Mandarin. I know a little of both, but nowhere near enough of either to be considered fluent. My Welsh is probably better due to being surrounded by it for 21 years...but I'd like to be able to do more than ask how are you, how's the weather and order a drink hahaha
