They say in marriage it’s “till death do us part.”
But not in this case.
Don and Maxine Simpson were married for 62 years.
And even in death they didn’t part.

Incredibly, the two of them died just four hours apart.
And they were holding hands practically right up until the end.

Their granddaughter Melissa Sloan says:
“I knew in my heart this is what's supposed to happen - Grandma and grandpa are supposed to be together and grandma and grandpa are going to die together.”

Don and Maxine were from Bakersfield.
They met at a bowling alley.
A few years later they were married.
They adopted two children.
And they traveled the world together.

“All (Grandpa) wanted was to be with his beautiful wife.
He adored my grandmother, loved her to the end of the Earth.”

Two weeks ago Don fell and broke his hip.
At about the same time Maxine’s cancer got worse.
The situation did not look good.

But their family knew they would want to be together so they moved them both into a spare room at the family’s home.

Their granddaughter says:
“We kept them together, and had their beds side-by-side.
Gram woke up and saw him, and (they) held hands and they knew that they were next to each other.”

Shortly after that Maxine died. And her granddaughter says that right after her body was wheeled out Don died:

“I walked back in to check on grandpa and he quit breathing as soon as her body left the room.
He left with her, and they passed four hours apart from each other.”

After 62 years of living together, Don and Maxine died together.

“It's just amazing.
It really is amazing.
It's a true love story.”

It sure is.
