IBM in the early 1950's developed the RAMAC which is Random Access Method of Accounting and Control...

The RAMAC stood about 6 ft tall, I forget how much it weighed, but you figure it was about the size of a commercial refridgrator..

To store data the RAMAC used 7-bit words with 1 parity bit (for error detection) and used one bit between words...

Later IBM developed hard disk drives that were smaller and much larger in capacity...IBM was also the first to create hard disks that took advantage of floating heads....

This is called air bearing...the air flow caused from the spinning of the disks actually causes the heads to float...
