Anyone know why certain sites heat up my computer?
#1
I'm just curious. As best as I can tell it's sites with a lot of ads on them, though some specialized wiki sites (but not wikipedia itself) are especially bad.

I just used the Merriam-Webster dictionary OL and as usual my computer fan has been whirring like crazy. Leaving the site doesn't stop it. I know from experience it's best to just reboot before my computer gets super hot and even freezes on me (that only rarely happens, but then I usually get tired of the whirring fan to reboot before it can get that hot anyway).

I've stopped going to some sites I enjoyed because of that and I'm thinking of adding the standard dictionary sites as well (after all, I have more than one dictionary in the room with me anyway).

The HuffPost sites are horrible for doing that. Their pages have a lot of ads, links, pics, and autoplay videos that are continuous play into the next video. I often have trouble with them loading slow and sometimes my fan starts.

Yeah, news sites are bad, too, and I recall HP doing that more than once.

Another thing is when I reboot it often tells me a program is still running so it doesn't want to shut down without permission. Sometimes it skips actually getting my permission but like this time it wouldn't shut down until I said to force it.

Ah well, everything seems back to normal (and I got another chore done while waiting for my computer to cool). Confusedmile:

I was told that dictionary.com has the most cookies of any site online. Dunno but it is an interesting notion. It's a shame that computer dictionaries are so eay to use. The old unabridged paper ones are wonderful, wonderful toys. I love looking at the origins of words and have learned a bit about languages that way. Online often omits a lot of that.

IDK does your computer have good tastes in porn???

I take it you have an older computer with an older graphics card...?

I know with this one, nearly 12 years old with a graphics card hella out of date it doesn't like things like animated images, video adverts and even some of those sites which are designed for Iphones and not for good and proper computers.

I use a product called Ghostry: https://www.ghostery.com/en/ and block nearly all of the listed addresses in its glossery.

Since doing so my browser goes a bit faster and my computer doesn't spaze out on most sites.

I have discovered that disabling the effects of windows appears to keep its graphics card from complaining.

Another product I use to speed up my machine in general is Ccleaner: https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER

Whenever I install/uninstall a program or do updates I run the register cleaner. About once a month I run the registry cleaner and the windows and applications cleaner. Not only do I clean out the cookies of firefox I also clean out prefetch and other things like event logs and such.

Cookies are kinda sorta cheeky little things. If you use automatic signin I strongly suggest backing up your usernames and passwords and clean that out every-so-often - I think the name is auto-complete on the Ccleaner.

Also may want to consider updating/patching things like ActiveX, Java/Adobe and other things. And if your card/board for graphics is still supported you may want to do an uninstall of the current graphics software and install the newest version. That would be done after going to 'safemode' so you would need to download the graphics software, store it on the desktop, reboot into safemode and uninstall, reboot again into safemode and install the new.

As for the computer hanging on programs that don't want to close. Usually when its asking for permission its because the program isn't closing fast enough. If you wait it will close by itself.

I write down whatever it is and see if there is an update, patch, whatever for the program - of it the program is even needed. For instance I was having issues with Apples Itunes updater. I had to uninstall and reinstall the whole apple software (which BTW has to be done in a certain order or your screwed - Thanks apple)

Lastly... Computers pick up a lot of dust and debris... I use my vacuum cleaner with the 'wand' attachment and hold it about an inch away from stuff inside to suck out the majority of the accumulated dust. That alone tends to boost performance as the machine can cool itself off.

There is specialized compressed air containers which are moisture free use for blowing debris out of components - I use that about once a year to blow out extra whilst running the vacuum to catch flying debris.

Mind do this when your computer is off and unplugged. I do it outside since dust does blow around a bit. This valley is a dusty dirty place...

Hope something out of all of that helps ya.

I didn't dare hope for more than an idea of what was going on but that Ghostery is a miracle worker!

Sure enough, the sites that gave my computer fits put a lot of crap on them that Ghostery identifies and blocks. The Ghostery blocks it all (at least what it detects) and I can now use sites again that I gave up on months ago with no problem. My browser is also faster and it prevents a lot of ads. I almost felt guilty over YT ads not affecting me anymore until I recalled how annoyed I've been with them lately.

And it was so easy to download that I was surprised it was actually up and running.

Again, thanks for that! Confusedmile:
