many many years ago, just after high school graduation, I was in a very dark place.

bottle of sleeping pills by my bed, the lyrics of this song written out. In the end I flushed the pills, but I kept this song. Some days it still resonates with me, but helps me from going back to that dark place.

Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good

"Wouldn't It Be Good"

I got it bad, you don't know how bad I got it
You got it easy, you don't know when you've got it good
It's getting harder just keeping life and soul together
I'm sick of fighting, even though I know I should
The cold is biting through each and every nerve and fiber
My broken spirit is frozen to the core
I don't want to be here no more

Wouldn't it be good to be in your shoes
Even if it was for just one day
Wouldn't it be good if we could wish ourselves away
Wouldn't it be good to be on your side
The grass is always greener over there
Wouldn't it be good if we could live without a care

You must be joking, you don't know a thing about it
You've got no problem, I'd stay right there if I were you
I got it harder, you couldn't dream how hard I got it
Stay out of my shoes if you know what's good for you
The heat is stifling, burning me up from the inside
The sweat is coming through each and every pore
I don't want to be here no more
I don't want to be here no more
I don't want to be here no more

Wouldn't it be good to be in your shoes
Even if it was for just one day
Wouldn't it be good if we could wish ourselves away, ooh
Wouldn't it be good to be on your side
The grass is always greener over there
And wouldn't it be good if we could live without a care

I got it bad, you don't know how bad I got it
You got it easy, you don't know when you've got it good
It's getting harder just keeping life and soul together
I'm sick of fighting, even though I know I should

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

I played in a garage band with my BF's dad for a while. He passed away 5 years ago and we played this at a memorial concert we did for him. First and only time we played it for an audience.

I have written a little a bit, but nothing I am really proud of.

Bright Eyes
Lover I Don't Have To Love

I picked you out
Of a crowd and talked to you
Said I liked your shoes
You said thanks can I follow you?
So it's up the stairs
And out of view
No prying eyes
I poured some wine
I asked your name you asked the time
Now it's two o'clock,
the club is closed we're up the block
Your hands on me
I'm pressing hard against your jeans
Your tongue in my mouth
Trying to keep the words from coming out
You didn't care to know
Who else may have been you before
I want a lover I don't have to love
I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck
Where's the kid with the chemicals?
I thought he said to meet me here but I'm not sure
I got the money if you got the time
You said it feels good I said I'll give it a try
Then my mind went dark
We both forgot where your car was parked
Let's just take the train
I'll meet up with the band in the morning
Bad actors with bad habits
Some sad singers
They just play tragic
And the phone's ringing
And the van's leaving
Let's just keep touching
Let's just keep keep singing
I want a lover I don't have to love
I want a boy who's so drunk he doesn't talk
Where's the kid with the chemicals
I got a hunger and I can't seem to get full
I need some meaning I can memorize
The kind I have always seems to slip my mind
But you but you
You write such pretty words
But life's no story book
Love's an excuse to get hurt
And to hurt
"Do you like to hurt?"
"I do! I do!"
"Then hurt me." [fades]

I always liked this song, also General Public's "Tenderness"

CAROLE KING- BEAUTIFUL

You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feel

Waiting at the station with a workday wind a-blowing
I've got nothing to do but watch the passers-by
Mirrored in their faces I see frustration growing
And they don't see it showing, why do I?

You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feel

I have often asked myself the reason for sadness
In a world where tears are just a lullaby
If there's any answer, maybe love can end the madness
Maybe not, oh, but we can only try

You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You're gonna find, yes, you will
That you're beautiful as you feel

BILLY IDOL - EYES WITHOUT A FACE

I'm all out of hope
One more bad dream could bring a fall
When I'm far from home
Don't call me on the phone
To tell me you're alone
It's easy to deceive
It's easy to tease
But hard to get release

Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Got no human grace your eyes without a face.

I spend so much time
Believing all the lies
To keep the dream alive
Now it makes me sad
It makes me mad at truth
For loving what was you

Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Got no human grace your eyes without a face.

When you hear the music you make a dip
Into someone else's pocket then make a slip.
Steal a car and go to Las Vegas oh, the gigolo pool.

Hanging out by the state line,
Turning holy water into wine
Drinkin' it down, oh
I'm on a bus on a psychedelic trip
Reading murder books tryin' to stay hip.
I'm thinkin' of you you're out there so
Say your prayers.
Say your prayers.
Say your prayers.

Now I close my eyes
And I wonder why
I don't despise
Now all I can do
Is love what was once
So alive and new
But it's gone from your eyes
I'd better realise

Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Got no human grace your eyes without a face.
Such a human waste your eyes without a face
And now it's getting worse.

I LOVE the last two lines...they spoke to me when I needed them to....

I exchanged a couple e-mails with Nik Kershaw years ago. I wish I had a wonderful story about it, but I don't even remember what we said to each other. He was nice - I do remember that much.

I have written a few songs, but none of them came to anything. I still remember the titles of a few that they were about as nondescript as their titles - "Cut", "Understand", "It's Too Late". I rewrote the theme from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for physics class in college - could that be any geekier? My friends in college and I pounded out a terrible song called "Fat Chicks With Cigarettes", which was fun for an embarrassed chuckle (the next line was "skin-tight bikini sweats"). I've done some more stuff like that through the years, but none of them are coming to mind other than those right now.

That said, I did have a song written ABOUT me. And it was not only performed, it was professionally recorded. I wish it were a song about how big my cock is, or how amazing I am in bed, but no. Smile Actually, it's a song mocking me. The band took me to lunch once and asked for advice on what sorts of songs I thought they should do. I gave them my thoughts, and they left thinking I was a pretentious blowhard who was the epitome of a eunuch in a harem. So they wrote a song about it, even including a "whoa-oh-oh" bit at the end. (I had told them "don't be afraid to just sing 'whoa-oh-oh' if that's what works.") As it ends up, this song ended up being the catchiest thing the band ever did. I still have the CD with the song on it, and all their autographs on it. Smile

My friend thought the title phrase was "How's About a Date?" Which is what I sing when it comes on. Smile

IDK if we have any Gaslight Anthem fans in here but Brian Fallon, the lead singer, had a side project the Horrible Crowes. One of their songs "Ladykiller" at least to me has a kind of bisexual, or heteroflexible bent to it:

"Ladykiller"

Watch me slide over here
Feel me breathe over there
I seen a ghost in our willow
Must've lost his lover somewhere
I been around a few times
Never caught a fever like you
Never seen me a woman
Turn a deeper shade of blue

And you must've met a man
Tall and handsome at that
Who must've put a spell on you, baby
Must've kept coming back
Cause I can smell him in your skin
I bet I taste him in your blood
Must be all the young boys, baby
Lady killer got the two of us

And how about this for a good one
Maybe we don't ever come down
I can leave the wound wide open
And maybe see if I can tough it out
Let it pour over my head
All your shame and your history
And see if I say a thing
As it rolls up inside of me

And you must've met a man
Tall and handsome at that
Who must've put a spell on you, baby
And must've kept on coming back
Cause I can smell him in your skin
I bet I taste him in your blood
Must be all the young boys, baby
Lady killer got the two of us

Don't cha say it feels like heaven
If you could sleep through the night
I used to just lay down and close my eyes
And it would feel like heaven
If I could sleep for a while
I used to float right above the fire

And you must've met a man
Tall and handsome at that
Who must've put a spell on you, baby
And must've kept on coming back
Cause I can smell him in your skin
I bet I taste him in your blood
Must be all the young boys, baby
Lady killer got the both of us
Lady killer got the both of us
Young boys, baby

Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on

Lady killer got the both of us
Young boys, baby
