Mugshots are never meant to be flattering and I imagine that some of these poor women were in really desparate financial straits to have resorted to prostitution. It's an old profession but I can't help but feel sorry for women who are so driven by their circumstances. 1940 the war in Europe was still raging. Maybe their menfolk were fighting or had been killed.
