Google Plus outed me to my mom...
#1
Sooo...yeah. Um, I received a call from my mom. She sounded really concerned about me and I started getting nervous. She then told me that she found me on Google Plus and noticed that I commented on several Youtube videos, particularly videos of gay romance films. I got REALLY nervous at that point, mainly because of how concerned she sounded. I was afraid she'd then ask if I was gay. But...instead she told me she didn't like a particular scene in the movie that was violent and bloody. She was concerned that I was watching ultra violent films. So...I eased her worries by telling her the movie was primarily a romance and the BRIEF moment of violence was just for suspense. Of course, she noticed the romance was of two guys and wondered why I'd watch something like that. So, she finally asked if I was gay. I told her honestly that I'm not sure if I'm gay or bi, but I'm definitely not straight.
Good news: She was totally accepting!! Big Grin She was far more worried about me watching violent movies than being gay/bi. Weird. Tongue
I'm not exactly ready to tell anyone else though, but it is very relieving to know that someone as important to me as my mom accepts me.
But...I really don't want something like this to happen again. So, to anyone that actually knows how Google Plus works, how can I delete my activities broadcasted onto Google Plus and prevent further Google/Youtube related activities from appearing there? What if someone else I know finds my account.....?

You NEVER know what the internet does with your information...!

Take yourself off google plus and stop commenting on YT videos. Or check your G+ settings.

You can safely assume that nothing you do on the internet is private.

You could bother to learn about Google Plus accounts before creating one.

They make disclosure about what can be seen by whom.

Smarten up.

Wow, I'm happy there was a good ending to it for you.

I always work on the assumption that anything I put online can be found by anyone who is willing to do the digging. Nothing is sacred.

Since Google bought YouTube they have made an effort to integrate all these services and it seems like it defaults to sharing everything you do. Commenting on a Youtube video while you are signed into your Google account (which -- if they have it their way -- is connected to your Google+, YouTube and gmail accounts) is "signed" with your Google identity, much like if you comment on something on Facebook. The worst part (to me) is that it seems as if they created a Google+ account for their users without asking if they wanted it, so many people may be unwittingly sharing stuff they're not planning to on a profile they've never seen.

My suggestion is to make a separate Youtube account that is not tied to your gmail/Google+ account if you don't want people that know you "in real life" to associate you with your video activity. If you have a second browser on your computer that you don't use for email, make it a habit to use that one for Youtube so you don't have to keep signing in and out.

And yay mom! She's more worried about violence than the ghey.

Poke around in here: https://www.youtube.com/account_privacy

Also is it possible she knew (or at least suspected) you were into guys and was worried (legitimately, given the statistics) that that made you vulnerable to hurting yourself??

Other than saying I am happy your mother is accepting, I am curious about some other things. You are 23 and your mother is acting like your mommy and checking on what you are doing. That is kind of creepy, don't you think? It sounds like you need to have boundaries with her. So what if you watch violent movies, you are a man. Imagine what would happen if she saw what you jack off to. Would she call you up because she was concerned you were watching bareback porn?

Are you by any chance the baby in the family or an only child?
