As the US Supreme Court prepares to rule on marriage equality, a NY Times columnist, WILLIAM N. ESKRIDGE Jr., points out that an absolute religion-vs.-gays dichotomy is no longer reality.

In my opinion...this is the most important part of the equation. The people who want to ignore this have other problems....gay marriage is not one of them..despite what they may think....

Race relations in this country show how religious practice and doctrine can change when public attitudes and the law change. Before the Civil War, many Mormons and Southern Protestants maintained that the Bible supported slavery for persons of African descent; when slavery ended, the same denominations read Scripture to require segregation of the races and to bar interracial relationships.
