I actually enjoy cooking but just started learning over the past few years since I've been on my own. My mom and my grandmothers have helped a lot, and reading cooking blogs.

I got some really good recipes from the no meat athlete site.

I have a few main things I fix, freeze and rotate because my schedule is pretty hectic and I don't eat any processed sugar or fast food. Things like split pea soup, minestrone, stuffed bell peppers, veggie chili, veggie burgers, veggie enchilladas, veggie lasagna.

This past summer I finally got brave enough to try yeast bread and after quite a few fails, I actually made a decent loaf of whole wheat bread!

I ended up making a career of cooking, and I still love it! Smile I originally started college (the first time, at 18 years old) on an art scholarship, majoring in Fine Art....but it didn't last. I have NEVER been a competitive person (at least with others) and I am very very non-confrontational. To be honest, the life of an "Artist" scared me. So..I changed majors to Cullinary Art!

I worked for other people for almost 18 years; in Dallas, Lo Hoya, Nashville, New York....I worked as an 'Opener' for a corporate restaurant chain, so I literally worked coast-to-coast until I finally saved enough to open my own food service establishment(s).

Toward the end of this month, I will be opening (what I consider) to be food service more in line with modern living: a Food Service Trailer! "Bon Temps Roulè: Louisiana Soul Food & Cajun Cafè". I am SO ready to get back to work! :-D

From what I understand from watching cooking shows, the big difference between cooking and baking is the precision that is required in baking. You can't or shouldn't just eyeball the measurements when baking.
I love Alton Brown's Just Eats program because he brings out the chemistry involved in cooking. He explains why things work and why they don't.

Speaking of sausages, have you ever wrapped your sausage in a potato lefse? Hey, I'm Norwegian, everything is better wrapped in lefse.

I have been cooking since I was about 8. Made my first full meal for the family from scratch at 9 years old. Did Thanksgiving dinner completely by myself at 10 or 11, including pies and yeast rolls.

Cooking can be fun and at the same time help you to save money and have healthy food. Knowing about food has been an enormous help in dealing with diabetes.

That's Good Eats, Darius. Alton Brown is a genius at combining cooking, science and entertainment. The chocolate chip cookie episode is a classic.
