Why you DON'T need to shower with soap
#21
LONDONER Wrote:In a recent BBC report Aqueous cream came out with pretty low ratings. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11564662) Why continue to use it if it makes you feel worse? You need to avoid anything that contains sodium lauryl sulphate.

Most soaps wash out the natural oils in your skin that help to keep it healthy. That's why I only use soap when I wash my hands or if I've managed to get some real dirt on me. I do have the habit of washing my hands each time I get home since I have been touching heavens knows what. A large percentage of people don't wash their hands after going to the lavatory so if you use public transport for instance, and hang on to a grab bar, it's more than likely that you'll be picking up something pretty nasty. But let common sense prevail, we need bacteria, some of them are useful and some help you reinforce your immune system.

Mhm, you are literally covered with useful bacteria, who in part are responsible for our acidic skin. The acids ward off some bacteria.

And yet, I'm not packing with infections.

Antibacterial soaps are a no no. Regular soap? I'm pretty sure it can't single handedly wipe out your entire skin flora, lol. Bacteria tend to be clingy like that.

Sorry, I neither give a f*ck about flawless skin nor I care much about people having to put up with my smell, especially after work out. And I deal with worse things than (allegedly) soap at work everyday, like getting dichloromethane thrown in my eyes.

Soap and deodorant forevaaaaaaaaah!

Everyone to their own. No one's forcing you to do anything.

when I go swimming in the pool, soap or shower gel is the only way I can rid of that chlorine smell.

I only use soap when necessary, deodorant, Never, only body spays and perfume. My skin is very sensitive it can't take a lot of products thats out there these days, I cream my face everyday though everyone says I always look flash. I wouldn't tell my brother to stop using deodorant though lol, he starts to smell even after a little walk, everyone's body is very different. Heat is actually a soap in its own right, to much of that is no good for the skin cells either; I think the word everyone is looking for is balance... well and moderation.

yeah, i've known this since 9th grade. our chem teacher was this really cool lady who was very fluent on the subject herself. i remember one day we were walking outside on the town and ran into her and she started talking to us about something pertaining to chemistry (as always), and that's when she steered the subject onto this topic and taught us about microbes and using too much soap (i suppose it was one of the most scientifically-enlightening moments of my teenage life that i remember it so well). she was cool like that. random encounters with her always ended up teaching us one thing or another.

Oh I know Smile

I'm merely pointing out that for some of us, those items are not optional Big Grin

I wish I smelled good all the time.

I met a guy in school once and he not only always smelled naturally good, but his odor was almost baby-like. He could pass all too well without deodorant. I can't say the same

I would also be inclined to disprove this anti-soap trend merely for fear of losing friendly bugs. Messing with skin bacteria is the result of excessive, not just regular soap usage. After all, a handful of not so nice pathogens, bacterial, fungal and viral are always roaming around everywhere, which is why transmition of infections from colds to enteric issues is always lessened when you wash your hands!

It's a whole other matter if there are skin issues, allergies, of course.
