being old...
#1
turned 50 this past year... will be 51 in March.

I remember an episode of Will and Grace where Jack said something like "oh my God, I'm 30!!! Do you know what that is in gay years?"

I'm actually happy and in a good place right now. I remember every day the friends I had who did not make it.

When you start using the expression "these kids these days" you know you're truly old... but many of my friends back in the 1980s never lived to see their 50s and were cut down in the prime of their life.

HIV was different back then.

So I am pleased to be alive and healthy and I count my blessings.

Guess my question is, number one, are gay men more ageist than other groups of society, and do the young people these days realize that time has pretty much been a constant for 40,000 years of human existence and do they hope they are treated more kindly when they are 50 than they treat 50 year olds now. It's gonna be you someday baby...

Wouldn't give up a year; I'm grateful for every day.

I don't believe that young gay men are any different than young straight men when it comes to being ageist. The "Generation Gap" is one of the reasons why the two don't mix as often as I'd like to see. Our outlook on life & opinions have a way of separating us.

Take politics for instance. Us old folks have followed the political arena for decades, while the younger folks may be experiencing it for the first time. Their views are formed by the last election cycle, while ours have developed over eons of time.

And yes,,, they have a tendency to ignore us............. After all, we are old and not up on the latest things like texting, or music. They (the younger folks) are interested in different things than us old codgers.

I have found that I can keep a younger person interested in me by cornering them where they can't escape and forcing them to listen to me,,,,,,,,,,, And I'm quite successful with this methodology right up to the point when the police arrive and escort me away!!!!

see, and there is so much truth in what ya'll say. there is an old saying that every generation looks at the one that is coming after them and says... "these kids these days"...

and the ultimate answer I believe was articulated by the Who

the "who"? the kids say. never mind.

but the Kids Are Alright.

"Ageism" is a bit more widespread than could possibly imagine...

From what I do know it's pretty darn intricate these days..

A seventh grader that is into tenth graders ..

Middle aged men (like myself ) that have mostly friends that are ten to thirty years older..

Teens with twenty something friends.. girlfriends and boyfriend's and visa versa.

We mostly pay attention to the dating aspects of Ageism. . but there is an alternate sociological dimension which we seem to ignore..

Back in 2008I was told I was ageist by an old roommate of mine. .
He pointed out that my world was built on the concept of older..
Examples. .
I am the last of five in a blended family..
My parents are significantly older ..
My friends are older.. and when I began dating I followed that pattern.. I never processed it.. I simply followed a pattern.

In my mid and late twenties I began dating younger.. then older..then my own age..then older..
Then..
I would not limit my needs to age..

Opening poster.
You started a thread based on Ageism.. but then you posted in the "Dating older or younger" thread that you prefer to date your own age..

Is ageism a struggle of yours ?
No judgement here ..
Just curious..

no prob bro

the last guy I got really serious about, and I broke my own rule

was 41. the sex was, well, epic

but that does not make for having something in common

I broke my own rule when I dated him. Generally I just find I have more things in common with someone who feels that face to face human interaction is better than Facebook...

one night we were hanging out... I had made several attempts at conversation. He was interacting with his smartphone...

I finally logged on to a website he was on.... and sent him a text basically saying, hey, this is your boyfriend. remember me? I'm sitting across the room from you.

that actually got his attention. guess I'm boring. but that was it for me. he didn't get invited back.
