Buying gay magazines
#11
sweetlad86 Wrote:I think you are right about how the these days it seems that gay mags arnt being put in the same place as the Lads mags, I don't buy any type of life style mags as I find them all boring but I think it would be right to place all these types of mags on the middle shelf instead of the top shelf.

I admit that is a while since I last flicked through any of the mags in question, but they seem to me to be essentially gay lads mags so putting them in the same location as straight lads mags seems about right to me.

Newspapers and magazines in well known stores are most likely arranged to a plan dictated by head office as companies will pay to have their products in certain places. This is the case with most well known shops so as FHM, Zoo and the like no doubt have a bigger circulation they can afford to display their magazines more prominently that GT.

I’ve worked in retail far too long Wink

I should have guessed that an exchange of money would be involved

Yes but they don't want to alienate the long running customers as the gray pound is stronger than the pink pound.

In other words their normal customer base wont like it, because most of their customers are older people and they don't want to upset them as the gray pound will go else where like the internet, so as there are more older people these days than ever before, so WHS will do what the older straight customers wants.

GT promises much, but one gets the impression they need the pages for the advertising. I can't afford to buy a range of magazines on a regular enough basis to try them out.

There are two mags over here in the USA that I enjoy reading.

out sounds similar to GT. A glossy mag with great photographers and models and one or two very well researched news articles per month.

THE ADVOCATE is a bi-weekly that focuses on politics more than anything. The issue that I picked up mostly focuses on gay family values with keys on adoption...

Most large cities have weekly free newspapers and most are very gay friendly. The most famous is out of NYC called
The Village Voice
.

I am sure that all of these mags have an internet presence as well as space on major book sellers...

on the topic of mag locations... I was on my old campus about a year ago. This is a HUGE uni - I believe the second largest employer in Pittsburgh - sooooo as I walked around killing time before an appt I walked into a couple small shops that had magazines and started riffling thru to find the gay section. NOPE nothing at all... was rather shocked as the gay population must be a bit more than the usual 10% but no one is selling to them.

Went to the tiny gay bookshop that has been there forever, with the same owners who are ancient but never seem to age, and got my mags with pride.

I just thought I would update you on this little skirmish. I went into town on Saturday (as always, a delightful cruise across the Great Ouse on the ferry) and called in at the little newsagents I mentioned in the first message. The woman behind the counter recognised me and said that she had mentioned my concerns about hiding GT, Attitude etc on the top shelf behind the porn titles. The manager didn't say much, apparently, which she took as the okay to move the gay mags to somewhere more accessible. However, the next day when she came in they'd been moved back up amongst the porn. My response was that I would continue to use the shop when I was in town, but that I would not be buying GT from them until there was a change in policy. She congratulated me for taking a stand and said she would be very happy to pass on my comments to the manager and sincerely hoped it would make a difference. I shan't hold my breath, but we'll see.

I don't have an objection to porn. I don't have an objection to the magazines being placed on the top shelf, if they are fairly placed. For example, I had this same discussion with the manager of WH Smith a few years ago and for a few months the gay lifestyle mags were placed two or three shelves from the floor, a very good place I thought. They are now back on the top shelf, but they are between the RAF newspaper and some digital art magazines. This is a world of difference from placing them amongst gay porn.

Am I the only crusader here, or is anyone else actually taking a stand on this?
