I admit that is a while since I last flicked through any of the mags in question, but they seem to me to be essentially gay lads mags so putting them in the same location as straight lads mags seems about right to me.

Yes but they don't want to alienate the long running customers as the gray pound is stronger than the pink pound.
In other words their normal customer base wont like it, because most of their customers are older people and they don't want to upset them as the gray pound will go else where like the internet, so as there are more older people these days than ever before, so WHS will do what the older straight customers wants.

I just thought I would update you on this little skirmish. I went into town on Saturday (as always, a delightful cruise across the Great Ouse on the ferry) and called in at the little newsagents I mentioned in the first message. The woman behind the counter recognised me and said that she had mentioned my concerns about hiding GT, Attitude etc on the top shelf behind the porn titles. The manager didn't say much, apparently, which she took as the okay to move the gay mags to somewhere more accessible. However, the next day when she came in they'd been moved back up amongst the porn. My response was that I would continue to use the shop when I was in town, but that I would not be buying GT from them until there was a change in policy. She congratulated me for taking a stand and said she would be very happy to pass on my comments to the manager and sincerely hoped it would make a difference. I shan't hold my breath, but we'll see.
I don't have an objection to porn. I don't have an objection to the magazines being placed on the top shelf, if they are fairly placed. For example, I had this same discussion with the manager of WH Smith a few years ago and for a few months the gay lifestyle mags were placed two or three shelves from the floor, a very good place I thought. They are now back on the top shelf, but they are between the RAF newspaper and some digital art magazines. This is a world of difference from placing them amongst gay porn.
Am I the only crusader here, or is anyone else actually taking a stand on this?
