The years 1915........can you believe it?
#1
THE YEAR IS 1915

This will boggle your mind! The year is 1915. One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1915:

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year...

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year.

A dentist $2,500 per year.

A veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year.

And, a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at home.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost 4 cents a pound.

Eggs were 14 cents a dozen.

Coffee was 15 cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month - and they used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

The 5 leading causes of death in 1915 were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhoea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30.

Crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was neither a Mother's Day nor a Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.

And only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin and morphine were all available over the counter at local corner drugstores.
Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach, bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!" (Shocking?)

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.!

I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself.

From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD all in a matter of seconds!

It is impossible to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

Yup, and Europeans were at each others throats. Thank goodness they don't do that anymore.

My dad was born in 1904 and my mother in 1906. They were married in 1921... that's right... HE was 17 and SHE was 15 years old. Apparently such marriages were not all that uncommon back in those days.

Its true, the future will no more look like the present than our present looks like the past. Many, many things will change.

And a lot of things won't.

When I was a kid growing up the closest thing to iPhones anyone had thought of was Dick Tracy's two-way wrist radio.

Atomic powered, no less.

Computers looked like this:

And our "vision" of "the future" looked more or less like this:

Or this:

The reality is actually far more wonderful and horrifying all at the same time ...

I PREDICT THAT WITHIN THE NEXT 50 YEARS WE WILL LEARN THAT MOST EVERYTHING WE THOUGHT WE KNEW ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE IS AT BEST INCOMPLETE AND AT WORST FLAT OUT WRONG, AND THAT HUMANITY WILL INCREASINGLY LOOK MORE LIKE THE BORG THAN "HUMANITY".

What? Are you kidding me? As a person in engineering, I find that upsetting.
According the CPI inflation calculator, $5000 in 1915 had the same buying power as $117,741.58 in 2015.*

As opposed to an average pay of $85,930 for US mechanical engineers reported in 2013.**

This an outrage. I demand all engineers in the USA be given a $32000 pay rise, pronto!

I can't believe how hard it was for me to find this online, but Mother's Little Helper could probably still be found in 1915:

Quote:There was a time when Opium wasn’t illegal. It wasn’t even shunned. In fact, it was a goddamned cureall. It was so widely accepted that it was often administered to children, even infants. Baby’s a little fussy? Give her a nip of Mother’s Little Helper, and she’ll nod right off! The dosage instructions say 2 drops for under three months, 4 drops for one year olds, 6 drops for a four year old, 14 for a ten year old, 25 for a twenty year old, and 30 drops for an adult

To think the human race will last much longer is delusional.

" 25 for a twenty year old, and 30 drops for an adult"

A telling distinction these days.
