Sci Fi becomes reality: Instant translator
#1
Remember how Star Trek crew members had universal translators? Now we can all have one - for just $129. Very useful if you're on a date with someone who doesn't speak your language.

That won't work very well for one majour reason:

Creoles such as the one I speak, Slangs and other non-conventional varieties of a Language change and often utilize language differently.

Trust me.

There's no way an app or programme can translate what I say gurl.

Just learn the language bitch Sheep

Along the lines of what Sylph said, I recently listened to a podcast about a what if future of technology like this. It got into the interesting details of translation vs interpretation and those industries and basically what could be lost with technologies like this. Interesting stuff.. Here's the link if anyone wants to give it a listen http://www.flashforwardpod.com/2016/05/0...2-omnibot/

Yas ma'am, turkey and ham;

A lil app or whatever could ofcourse learn and translate word:

For instance our words : Bogarda to mean "Copy Cat"
Or Skanty to mean "Cheap/Bare/Suspicious"

But the real meaning would be lost on you if I used those words in a natural sentence, because of semantics and nuance.

In Standard American and European English: You do not say "You copy cat me" which is what that app would tell you hypothetically is Ya bogarda me (soooo wrong and tacky)

But: Ya bogarda enuh? which makes more sense "You're copying/mirroring me you know", but is literally "You copy" in Standard Form, which is obviously a broken sentence fragment in Standard English.

That app would never work, unless it's an ever updating app that collects all minute details lf lingual growth.

This technology is in its early days yet and naturally doesn't cover non European languages and dialects. No translator even claims to be able to translate regional dialects and phrases and frankly, the way that many people in the UK speak today I believe that it would have great difficulty in translating common speech. I mean, I think it would be confused by the injection of the word "fuck" every few words.

or like i can say for example "my house" by four differend way:
minun talo (lit.)
minun taloni (lit. with possessive suffix)
mun talo (spoken language, minun->mun)
taloni (only with pos. suf.)

and if you include "also" and "in" (also in my house)
shortly: talossanikin (talo with suffixes: -ssa/-ni/-kin - -kin means "myös"/"also")

but i think it is in the near future because almost all dictation softwares nowadays understand my language quite well and can do correct work with cases.
