Upside Down

No AWD prius. I would suggest the Honda CRV for something that is still economical. I'm sure we'll be seeing more EV/Hybrid SUV in the future. I mean if Tesla can pack a 75kWh battery in a sports car I'm sure it can work in a SUV, just a matter of making it affordable.

Trouble is that the CR-V keeps getting more mini-van cushy and less car-truckish.

That is true a guy I know has had several of them. I think it is just their target customer would be my best guess, people want an inexpensive, comfortable AWD vehicle. It's not a Jeep but I would rather drive the CR-V all day long over a Jeep. People have different needs...and wants lol

Camfer Wrote:Alright, so we've got a goal that could be set here, that sometime before 2022 or 2026, you'll have such good credit that if you need a new car loan, you'll walk into the dealer with a pre-approved low interest rate loan from a financial institution with whom you've built a long term relationship. This will enable you to get a lower rate than the dealer loan markup.

Do they make a 4WD Pruis I can use to get to the farm here? lol

Actually, he could do better than that. If he pays off this car in 3 or 4 years (no more than 4) then put the car payments into a savings account after that, in 3 or 4 years, he pays cash for a new car.

That would be very true, however, I am hoping I will be looking at houses in that time frame. The car, in it's current loan, should be paid off at the end of 2022, of course my goal is to have that paid off sooner. The task right now is to reduce overall spending and I can definitely see fuel being a huge one...Haven't filled the car yet but it keeps saying I'm averaging 70+ MPG to work and everywhere else I got well into the 60's. Compared to 22-25 on the Challenger, not to mention the lower payment and hopefully insurance once the switch over goes through. Going to look at purchasing GAP through the auto insurance policy I have as I keep hearing that it is much cheaper and should anything happen I will hopefully be covered and not hung out to dry.

I do hope the Prius will last longer than the loan term, that's often the problem with cars in general, especially with the long loan terms.

Well now that the car business is out of the way. There's something new that is coming down the pipeline. The state department that oversees the institutions like the place I work in is replacing someone who retired. Of course never know if I would be one to get such a position but a possible opportunity as well.

Here's the catch, I feel that I can't take the position if I were even offered because the job is over at the state capital. So that means I would have to move and rather quickly I might add. The problem with moving is simply that I'm in no position to move. A major side effect to frivolous spending. I estimated it would probably cost $3,000-5,000 to move into a place. After all you have to deal with the rent, you have to put down security deposits on everything and you have to get your crap into the new place.

Just a though, not to mention I have next to zero furniture that would be worth taking, so I would be sleeping on an air mattress for some time. Not that I'm opposed to doing that, but just sounds like it is just a little bit out of my reach and I'm sure there will be more opportunities. Just a thought and things like this need to be a reminder to me as far as getting to places goes.

I don't necessarily like the idea of moving to a big city and so on but it might be the right path to take in terms of career. However, I would be pretty much alone which might be bad for me too.

Apply for the position. You need a move to a city. You can figure out the finances.

It's time to create your "emergency" fund. Sounds like it needs to be about $3K - $6K. This is higher priority than paying off your credit card debt.

(Had you not just spent $2K swapping cars, you'd be well on your way. We don't need to get into a discussion about that now.)

Well on the car I didn't actually spend anything, the $2,000 comes from the net cost over the financing.

The problem is I have no cash to move. Regardless what I had done with the car I would still have a high car payment. Ok so enough about the car crap lol

So I get paid monthly and what I get paid is not nearly enough to deposit for an apartment or anything. Most want 1st, last and security deposit...and I have a cat and I'd hate to have to get rid of him so there's pet deposit as well. Security deposit for electric and other utilities. So yeah my only way out would be to ask my parents for money which is silly and only delays the saving up of any money.

So the next step is putting back money for such a move. The application deadline is in a couple weeks, if they move like they did at the college we're talking like I need to have my duckies in a row within a month.

I don't know how I am going to stretch what I make (not posting that on the forum, the discussion would need to go privately to get into those details) to get into an apartment or even come up with the money alone to get into a place.

Bottom line is I don't think it is feasible, not without really sabotaging things like not paying bills, etc. I don't think my situation is dire. I do agree that I need to move, somewhere...

I think like you say, holding back some money is a better place to start. Will have to make a budget that focuses on that. I mean it is going to take some time to get $5k in the bank with all the things I got going on debt and payment wise.

At any rate there are always people retiring somewhere. Since I am in the state vacancies are often emailed to everyone in the state so I'm sure there will be more. I just don't see how I can pull it off, if it were a little later on or had more of a heads up I might be able to arrange something.

Good to know the car swap cost you nothing out of pocket.

All great points regarding the move, and I still encourage you to apply. If you get a job offer, you are not obligated to take it. They will at least give you a little bit of time to consider. You can use that time to have a talk with your parents, sister, etc., to figure out how to swing it. If this were in the for-profit world, there may even be moving expense reimbursement (and moving for a job is a tax deduction BTW.)

Moving is not just a financial consideration. It is also a quality of life consideration. Getting a little more in debt for a needed life change is in essence investing in yourself.

A cat should be little barrier in finding a rental. Would you be making any more salary in the new position?

Get that resume spruced up and give it a go!

Yeah it would equate to about 10k more than what I make now...

The only question I would not never know is how much I would enjoy working at the job. Instead of working at or for one institution I would working with closer to 60. I would be helping with handling help desk tickets coming from all the institutions, escalation, etc.

I'm pretty sure I stay on state retirement and so forth. On the other hand I don't think there is much harm in letting things go for another year either. I'll go ahead and discuss things over and apply for the position.

The other thing would be getting updated references. I would want to get at least of the folks I work with to be put down as a reference but I also don't want to strip up things which might cause problems for me. I mean I don't think anyone would be so bitter but I don't know if I would want to just go up to my supervisor and say hey I'm applying for another job can I use you as a reference lol. I don't think that would pan out so well, but having him and other current co-workers would beneficial.
