Riding a bike is dangerous because you are not surrounded by a protective metal box.

It is.... I did some riding back over the summer and I had a mirror, helped out a lot... Most of the time you can't hear the cars come up behind you.

North Carolina, and their brilliance, passed a law that cyclists can take the entire lane. I think that is very risky, but at times it is a good idea to take the lane in some cases but motorists are often idiots and right you're not protected by a steel frame and that isn't always enough.
